Food Tech: Food waste continues to trend with Wasteless and Winnow

  1. DouxMatok is partnering with Europe’s largest sugar producer, Sudzucker, based on positive reviews consumers of DouxMatok’s sugar shared with the sugar giant – a great example of effecting change from the consumer side to create the supply (AgFunder).
  2. Farmers Fridge gets an in-depth feature about their food tech-savvy vending machines and their app, all the way to their $30M round raise led by Google’s former CEO Eric Schmidt (Olenick).
  3. FB! SF alum PLANETARIANS just closed seed round of funding, with a little help from Barilla Group’s BLU1877 venture capital arm (Baking Business).
  4. Abi Ramanan of ImpactVision highlights its collaboration with BSM and how it has evolved into a beautiful partnership, significantly impacting both organizations in positive ways (YouTube).
  5. In line with the World Economic Forum’s vision for a circular economic model, Winnow is highlighted as a winner of The Circulars award for its efforts in waste management and its “smart meter” (GreenBiz).
  6. Wasteless is profiled for its innovative approach to changing the future of food waste (Stores).
  7. Sophie’s Kitchen, the gourmet plant-based seafood company, is included in a roundup highlighting the relationships between startups and accelerators, specifically their participation in Chipotle’s new Cultivate Aluminaries project (Smart Brief).

 

CPG: Creative Nature’s Julianne Ponan snag Forbes’ 30 Under 30 title

  1. Recent FB! Alum Taali Foods gets a mention top food startups to watch from YCombinator’s latest class of 2019 (The Spoon).
  2. Creative Nature founder Julianne Ponan is one of Forbes’s 30 Under 30 Europe, recognized for her work in creating vegan, allergy-safe superfood snacks and baking mixes (Forbes).
  3. Hip Chick Farms is highlighted as one of the startups finding newborn success in the frozen aisle, citing consumers desire for both health-concscious offerings as well as convenience (Perspective Branding).
  4. Sea Chips enters the Dragon’s Den on the UK’s hit show, and though they deny the offer put on the table, they end up taking a $300M deal from industry mogul Jonathan Brown (Eat Drink Yorkshire).
  5. RIND founder Matt Weiss is featured in S for Story’s ‘Startup Spotlight’ podcast, highlighting the company’s 3x month-over-month growth, family history as food pioneers and more (S4Story).
  6. Renewal Mill, the upcycled, gluten free flour made from soy, raises $2.5M for alternative upcycling through HG Ventures (The Spoon).
  7. Pulp Pantry receives a nod for their upcycled granola and veggie thins (The Spoon).
  8. Ocean Hugger Foods continuing to amass a ton of press for their plant-based sushi, Ahimi Tuna (VegNews) (MSN).
  9. Moringa superfood producer Kuli Kuli catches lots of headlines for its $5M round of series B funding led by Kellogg’s VC fund eighteen94 and Griffith Foods (Food Dive). AgTech: MycoTech raises $30M for plant-powered mycelian protein 

  1. The mighty mushroom continues to rein: MycoTech raises $30M series C funding through an all-star syndicate of investors, including existing investors S2G Ventures, Middleland Capital, and ADM’s Cibus Fund, among others (AgFunder), and Smallhold’s Andrew Carter pens the argument for why 2019 is the year of the mushroom (AgFunder).
  2. Canadian-based Ukko Agro is featured in an article for the rise of enviro-tech, highlighting their technology that helps farmers optimize water and pesticide use while minimizing crop loss  (Communitech).
